SAÉ 2 “Cell Phones at School and at Home” – Understanding Socialization
The “Cell Phones at School and at Home” SAÉ immerses Grade 7 students in the core concept of socialization. They learn how both family and school settings (primary culture and secondary culture) influence their behavior and sense of identity. From the opener, “Cards in Hand”, learners associate various social environments with corresponding attitudes or values, illustrating how these spheres shape personal development. In Activity 1, “Decoding Cell Phone Use,” students conduct a survey on smartphone habits and create an informational profile of a typical hyperconnected teenager. Activity 2, “Is the Phone a Friend or an Enemy?”, encourages discussion around the benefits and drawbacks of technology in multiple contexts, while Activity 3, “Code of Conduct 2.0,” invites them to propose responsible phone-use practices. Finally, the Final Activity, “Plugged In or Unplugged?”, features a debate on whether young people can truly live without a smartphone. This SAÉ highlights the cross-curricular competency “Using Information and Communications Technologies” and fosters meaningful reflection on social roles, adolescent development, and overall well-being.
