SAÉ 1 “Who Am I?” – Discovering and Understanding Identity
Discover SAÉ 1, “Who Am I?”, an essential module for exploring the concept of identity in Grade 7 under the Quebec Culture and Citizenship program.
This activity encourages students to question what makes them unique and examine the construction of both individual and collective identity, along with adolescent identity transformation and self-awareness. Throughout these activities, learners discover how self-identity evolves over time and under social influences, fostering empathy and appreciation for human diversity. By examining personal traits and relationships, students learn how experiences shape identity.
First, the opener “What Makes Us Unique?” sparks a discussion around facets of identity. Next, Activity 1, “On the Road to Independence,” challenges students to solve a problem faced by a fictional character navigating personal identity while reflecting on the influence of peer groups. Activity 2, “Beyond Appearances,” prompts them to investigate various dimensions of a character’s identity from different perspectives. Finally, the culminating activity, “The Art of Being Yourself,” concludes the journey with a slideshow celebrating the diversity of identities.
Spanning multiple sessions, this SAÉ draws upon key concepts of health and well-being, as well as the cross-curricular competency “Achieving One’s Potential,” to guide every student toward a deeper understanding of themselves and others.
