In the context of cross-curricular teaching between mathematics and visual arts in the primary cycle, this project, titled "Addition Through Shapes," encourages students to explore both mathematical concepts and artistic creativity.

The goal is to create a totem based on the theme of animals living in the Innus territory, thereby modeling a mathematical problem situation while delving into the art world.

  • Skill 1 – Solving Mathematical Problem Situations: Students learn to identify relevant data in a problem and connect this data to the artistic task at hand. They develop skills in problem modeling, applying various strategies, and revising their solutions, all enriched by exchanges with their peers.
  • Transversal Skill 2 – Problem Solving: This skill evolves through the ability to identify the key elements of a simple problem situation and to experiment with different solutions. Students also learn to analyze the reasons behind their successes or failures.
  • General Training Domain – Environment and Consumption: The intention is to lead students to maintain a dynamic and critical relationship with their environment, taking into account the exploitation of the environment, technological development, and consumer goods.
  • Cultural Link: The project includes an educational aspect related to Innus culture, with traditional teaching about the animals of this community, thanks to a production by Manitu inc.
  • Artistic Links: In plastic arts, the objective is to develop visual literacy in students, their ability to create, symbolize, express, and communicate through image. Techniques such as cutting, gluing, and freehand drawing are explored.
  • Innus Educational Objectives: Authored by Anne-Marie André from Uashat (Quebec), these objectives aim to awaken in children the knowledge and respect for their Innus culture, environment, traditions, and to introduce them to various aspects of Innus life, past and present.

This project offers an integrated and dynamic approach to learning, where mathematics and visual arts meet to foster a holistic development of skills in primary cycle students. It highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity in education while showcasing the cultural richness of the Innus.
