SAÉ 4 "Food and Veganism" from the Relationships and Caring component of the CCQ program for Secondary 4 invites students to explore issues related to food, ethics, and the environment. This SAÉ aims to develop critical understanding of dietary choices and their impact on health, society, and the planet.

The Introduction: À la carte engages students in reflecting on their eating habits. By examining a variety of menus and culinary practices, they are encouraged to share their preferences and consider factors influencing their choices, such as culture, family, and media.

Activity 1: Vegan or Local Food? offers a comparative analysis between veganism and consuming local products. Students study the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, considering nutritional, environmental, and economic aspects. This activity stimulates reflection on sustainability and individual responsibility in the context of food.

In Activity 2: Industrial Hunter-Gatherer, students explore the evolution of dietary practices from prehistoric times to the industrial era. They examine how mass production and globalization have transformed our relationship with food, addressing themes such as overconsumption, food waste, and the environmental impact of intensive agriculture.

Activity 3: The Domestic Turkey invites students to look into industrial farming and animal welfare. Through the case study of farm-raised turkeys, they discuss animal living conditions, ethical implications, and possible alternatives, such as free-range farming or vegetarian and vegan dietary choices.

This SAÉ concludes with a synthesis of learning, where students are encouraged to develop their own informed position on responsible food choices. It aims to promote a conscious and caring attitude towards oneself, other living beings, and the environment.
