How can parents and teachers help a Secondary 4 student progress and succeed in French throughout the school year?

In Secondary 4, a student’s needs can change quickly. A student may understand a short story but lack confidence when defending an idea. Another may have a great deal to say but struggle to organize a text, choose precise words or correct recurring errors. As a French exam approaches, the number of concepts to review may also become a source of stress.

The Cible Secondary 4 French collection provides a complete learning path designed to address these realities throughout the school year. Jointly produced by Collection Tardivel and Dokoma, with contributions from French teachers at the Centre de services scolaire de Portneuf, it brings together four workbooks covering reading, writing, oral communication, French grammar, vocabulary, verb conjugation and exam review.

The collection supports students who need additional help or encouragement, as well as those who want to consolidate or deepen their learning. Its modular structure allows teachers to adjust the pace, target observed difficulties and provide enrichment without separating the class into fixed groups.

Four workbooks for a complete school year

Each workbook has two main sections: reading, writing or oral communication activities, followed by an eight-week French grammar program. Together, the four workbooks provide 32 weeks of Secondary 4 French grammar, along with verb conjugation, vocabulary, exercises, language games and enrichment features.

Workbook 1: Understanding and writing literary short stories

The first workbook immerses students in narrative texts, literary short stories and microfiction. Students learn to identify the narrator and point of view, follow the sequence of events, understand each character’s quest and interpret thoughts, emotions, motivations and values. They support their interpretations with precise textual clues and apply their discoveries in a writing task.

Students work with texts including Prisonnière, Odeur de trahison, Rendez-vous au parc and Matin brun. The French grammar section consolidates parts of speech, syntactic groups, verb tenses, language registers, antonyms, synonyms, prefixes, suffixes, polysemy and homonymy.

Workbook 2: Renewing motivation through choice and argumentation

The second workbook addresses a frequent concern: how can teachers motivate Secondary 4 students in French? Its activities give reading and writing a concrete purpose. In a battle of the books, students choose a work, build a justification and try to convince their classmates. They then explore argumentative writing through current topics, including artificial intelligence and issues connected to school life.

The eight-week French grammar section covers basic sentence structure, subordinate clauses, verb tense and meaning, sequence of tenses and indirect reported speech. Vocabulary topics include emotions, initialisms, acronyms, polysemy, values, beliefs and loanwords.

Workbook 3: Expressing ideas and emotions more clearly

The third workbook uses theatre, poetry and song to help students find their voice. They examine how word choice, gestures, stage directions, rhythm, imagery and sound can persuade, move an audience or give an idea a more personal form.

In the theatre module, students distinguish different dramatic genres, analyze how a scene is constructed and write a speech designed to persuade or move an audience. The poetry module invites them to interpret poems, songs, rap and slam, then create a musical mural celebrating Quebec culture.

The French grammar section covers information continuity, anglicisms in French, adjective agreement with collective nouns, plural forms of compound nouns, complement clauses and past participle agreement with avoir. Vocabulary work introduces figures of speech such as hyperbole, irony, euphemism, litotes, metonymy, oxymoron and antithesis.

Workbook 4: Preparing for a French exam without feeling overwhelmed

The fourth workbook focuses on Secondary 4 French exam preparation. It helps students organize their review, use a preparatory reading package more effectively, build an argumentative text and apply a reliable proofreading method. The material is divided into clear steps so that students can recognize what they already understand and target the difficulties that still require attention.

The final eight weeks provide targeted exercises and correction games involving commas, determiners, complements, direct speech, agreements, sequence of tenses, past participles, anglicisms in French, pleonasms and overly vague words. This progression allows students to spread their preparation over several weeks instead of trying to review everything at the last minute.

Note for Quebec families: the ministerial examination in French, language of instruction, is administered in Secondary 5. Workbook 4 prepares students for their Secondary 4 French exam and argumentative writing without presenting this assessment as a ministerial examination.
